Vigilante Justice and Hospital Riots
The search for Jefferson Lewis ended late Thursday when he was located near the Charles Creek town camp. Before police arrived, locals reportedly intercepted Lewis and "beat him badly."
The violence escalated further after Lewis was transported to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment. Angry crowds gathered outside the facility, leading to clashes with police and an "arrest that sparked further violence," according to local reports.
The Federal Response
Speaking from Canberra on Friday, May 1, Prime Minister Albanese acknowledged the "anger and frustration" gripping the town but urged a return to order.
The PM's Message: "This is a community that are hurting, that need to come together. We certainly understand people’s anger... but we want to see the community come together."
