The "Evidence of Absence"
Commissioner Dole emphasized that in a tight-knit community like Alice Springs, the complete disappearance of a man for nearly a week is "highly unusual" without external help.
"The evidence is the lack of information... that absence tells us someone is assisting," Dole told ABC Radio.
He urged anyone providing shelter or information to Lewis to prioritize Sharon's safety over personal loyalty or fear of retribution, promising that any tips provided would be handled with extreme sensitivity.
New Complication: Sharon is Non-Verbal
Authorities have highlighted a significant hurdle in the search: Sharon is non-verbal and primarily communicates using her hands. This detail complicates the "lost and wandered" scenario, as the child would be unable to call out to search parties or explain her situation to a passerby if she were separated from Lewis.
