Unauthorized Entry And Protocol Failures

A security lapse at Gordon Parks Academy in Wichita resulted in an unauthorized adult gainng access to a student on Monday morning. Wichita police report that a 36-year-old male entered the middle school and spoke with a 13-year-old girl without the knowledge or consent of her parents. Although the student was in the school office surrounded by other adults at the time, Wichita Public Schools spokesperson Susan Arensman confirmed that the district’s established protocols for vetting visitors were not followed by the staff involved.

Escalation And Subsequent Arrest

The situation escalated the following day when the same man returned to the campus on Tuesday. School staff identified him and ordered him to leave the premises immediately before notifying law enforcement. Following an investigation into the two incidents, Wichita police arrested the man on Wednesday on suspicion of stalking. In addition to the criminal charges, the individual has been officially barred from entering any property within the Wichita Public Schools district. Per editorial policy, the suspect’s name is being withheld pending formal charges.

Family Criticism and Public Accountability

The arrest followed a period of intense public scrutiny after a social media post by the student’s aunt went viral. The post accused the district and the Wichita Police Department (WPD) of failing to protect children and breaking safety protocols. The family member claimed that the district provided no public acknowledgment or reassurance to other families following the initial breach. "Our children are supposed to be safe at school," the aunt wrote, urging other parents to demand transparency regarding how the intruder was allowed direct contact with a minor.
