The AU$1.4 Billion Clean Energy Infrastructure Development

The newly unveiled fund is designed to finance a robust pipeline of transmission and generation projects, specifically targeting Perth and the Southwest region. A primary objective is to lower the barriers for renewable energy integration while ensuring electricity remains affordable for the public. By investing directly in state-owned infrastructure, the government aims to stabilize the energy market and provide the foundational support needed for private sector renewable developments to thrive.

High Capacity Transmission and the Clean Energy Link

Central to the state’s strategy is the Clean Energy Link (CEL) program, which consists of several high-capacity transmission corridors. CEL-North, currently under construction between Malaga and Three Springs, is tasked with reinforcing the transfer of renewable energy from the Mid-West region. Meanwhile, the newly prioritized CEL-East project will connect wind and solar hubs east of Collie to the main grid. These projects utilize high-capacity substations and transformers to modernize a grid originally designed for centralized coal-fired generation.

Strategic Positioning and Economic Rationale

The expansion is projected to unlock approximately 3GW of new renewable capacity, providing a critical buffer for the state’s growing energy demands. Beyond energy security, the initiative is a significant economic driver, expected to support roughly 800 construction jobs. By designating these as priority projects under the State Development Act 2025, the government is streamlining regulatory pathways to ensure the infrastructure is operational by the end of the decade, thereby maintaining the state's competitive edge in the national economy.
