Presidential Directive Targets Grid Stability Before Summer Peak

The Egyptian government has finalized plans to integrate approximately 2.5 GW of new renewable energy capacity into the national power grid before the high-demand summer season. This strategic acceleration, announced by the official spokesman for President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, is intended to maintain consistent grid performance and alleviate the heavy burden on conventional fuel supplies during periods of maximum consumption. During a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and key energy ministers, the President emphasized that securing the country’s electricity supply is a matter of national priority as regional climate patterns continue to drive record energy usage.

Geopolitical Tensions Prompt Strategic Energy Shift

The decision to fast-track green energy projects comes as Egypt evaluates the potential risks posed by escalating regional tensions between the United States and Iran. Authorities are concerned that conflict in the Middle East could disrupt critical energy supply routes and cause a sharp spike in the prices of imported petroleum products. By diversifying the national energy mix with localized renewable sources, the administration seeks to insulate the domestic economy from external shocks. The President has tasked the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources with reviewing natural gas readiness to ensure the electricity sector remains resilient even if global energy markets face significant instability.

Solar Power Dominates National Renewable Growth

By the end of 2025, Egypt’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached a milestone of 9.1 GW, establishing a solid foundation for the current expansion. Solar energy has emerged as the leading contributor to this green portfolio, with 3.2 GW currently in operation, followed closely by wind farms at 3 GW and hydropower at 2.8 GW. Figures released by the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) indicate that biomass and other smaller sources make up the remainder of the capacity. This diverse technological base allows the national grid to capture energy from various natural resources, reducing the environmental footprint of the country’s industrial growth.
