The pepperoni roll is more than a regional snack; it is a functional artifact of West Virginia's industrial history. Invented to serve the needs of Italian immigrants working in the state’s coal mines, the roll solved the problem of a filling, portable meal that required no refrigeration. Giuseppe “Joseph” Argiro is widely credited with commercializing the snack in 1927 at Country Club Bakery in Fairmont. The traditional preparation involves baking sticks of pepperoni inside bread dough; as it bakes, the oil from the meat seeps into the bread, creating a self-preserving, flavorful center.
