Surfing and Sustainability at Hotel Fermata

Located in the Pacific coastal hub of Santa Teresa, Hotel Fermata was recognized for its strategic positioning in front of the world-renowned La Lora surf break. Opened in December 2025, the 35-room boutique resort is the latest project from the Rivella Group. The property distinguishes itself by offering rare direct beach access on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Beyond its luxury accommodations—which range from oceanfront casitas to a premier two-bedroom villa—the hotel operates a high-end surf school and a members-only beach club that integrates hotel guests with the local Santa Teresa community.

Botanical Immersion at Origins Astral Lodge

Earning acclaim for its deep integration with the northern rainforest, Origins Astral Lodge is situated 2,600 feet above sea level in Bijagua de Upala. Nestled between the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes, the lodge is a celestial-themed expansion of the original Origins Floral property. The resort consists of seven villas designed through a collaboration between global firm Gensler and local architect Mario Aviles. The design philosophy pays homage to the Indigenous Maleku community, with each villa named after a planet and the grounds mapped to reflect celestial constellations.

Strategic Use of Local Materials and Architecture

A core component of both hotels' success in the rankings was their commitment to sustainable luxury. Origins Astral Lodge utilized locally crafted furniture made from naturally fallen timber found within its 139-acre estate. Similarly, Hotel Fermata was constructed using energy-efficient systems and eco-friendly materials, aligning with a broader industry shift toward "regenerative travel." These architectural choices reflect a sophisticated market strategy that caters to high-net-worth travelers seeking environmental responsibility without sacrificing premium amenities.
