Wellington in the Eye of the Storm
The situation in the capital turned critical overnight as a new band of intense rain centered over the city. A state of emergency was officially enacted at 4:30 PM today in response to widespread infrastructure damage and the severe risk to life. Southern suburbs including Island Bay, Berhampore, Newtown, Brooklyn, and Mornington have been hit particularly hard by both surface flooding and landslips.
Search and rescue operations are currently focused on the suburb of Karori, where police are searching for Philip Sutton, a man in his 60s reported missing after a significant slip and debris flow struck his property. Residents in all low-lying or flood-prone areas across the region are being urged to self-evacuate immediately to higher ground, with the Wellington City Mission Whakamaru established as a primary emergency shelter.
National Crisis: Whanganui and Ruapehu Districts
The emergency is not confined to the capital. States of Local Emergency remain in effect for several other North Island districts:
Whanganui: A state of emergency was declared early Sunday morning as the Whanganui River threatened to overtop stopbanks. While the river peak at midday Sunday was slightly lower than feared, authorities remain on high alert for tonight’s midnight high tide.
