Reports of Misconduct on Campus

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) initiated a criminal investigation on March 3 following a report of inappropriate behavior involving a teacher and a student. The incident reportedly involved 72 year old Michael Lewis Jones and a student within the school’s ESE program. According to sheriff’s officials, the investigation was bolstered by a separate report from a school staff member who claimed to have witnessed a suspicious interaction between Jones and the same student on campus.

Arrest and Legal Charges

Following the initial reports, Jones was immediately placed on administrative leave and removed from the school grounds. He was later located at his home in Holmes County, where he was taken into custody by local authorities. Jones is currently held at the Holmes County Jail pending his extradition back to Walton County. He has been formally charged with offenses against students by an authority figure, which is classified as a second degree felony under Florida statutes.

Response from School Leadership

Walton High School Principal Brianna Leavins addressed the situation in a public statement, expressing that the allegations have deeply impacted the faculty and the broader community. Leavins emphasized that the school staff remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all students. The administration is reportedly cooperating fully with the WCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau as the legal process moves forward.
