Capital Punishment Mandated For High-Stakes Robbery

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has concluded a long-running criminal trial by issuing a death sentence to two 31-year-old men, Ojo Tosin Olasunkanmi and Obamoyegun Dele. The judgment, delivered by Justice Bamidele Omotoso, marks the end of a legal process that began with their initial arraignment in early 2020. The convicts were found guilty on six counts of conspiracy and armed robbery, falling under the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act. A third defendant, Adewale David, passed away while the case was still pending before the court.

Deceptive Tactics Used In Midnight Invasion

The details of the crime, which occurred on August 11, 2018, at Oganganmodu in Ido-Ekiti, revealed a calculated and deceptive operation. One of the victims, Ojo Bosede, testified that her family had traveled from Lagos for a wedding when the assailants arrived at approximately 1:00 a.m. The robbers reportedly identified themselves as officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), claiming they were searching for hidden narcotics. When the residents grew suspicious and refused entry, the attackers scaled the fence and used stones to shatter the home's security barriers.

Evidence Recovery And Prosecution Success

Once inside the residence, the criminals, armed with guns and axes, systematically robbed the occupants of various valuables. The stolen items included ₦290,000 in cash, a laptop, multiple mobile phones, and a Toyota Sienna Space Bus. During the investigation, police recovered the vehicle along with 15 SIM cards and the black axe used during the break-in. The prosecution, led by O.B. Ayeleso, presented nine witnesses and extensive photographic evidence to link Olasunkanmi and Dele to the crime scene and the subsequent possession of the stolen property.
