The Breaking Development: The Bridge 2 Washout
The closure is centered at the Featherston end of the Remutaka Hill road, where floodwaters have undercut the structural integrity of the highway.
The Damage: NZTA reported major scouring and undercutting at "Bridge 2," making the road unsafe for all vehicle types.
The Fix: NZTA Wellington alliance manager Roxanne Hilliard stated that crews are "double crewing" the site with heavy equipment to implement a temporary fix.
Closure Duration: While NZTA officially cited a 24-hour window, local workers on-site have warned that the approaches to the bridge are so badly damaged it could take at least two days to reopen.
