High Speed Pursuit on Interstate 90

A traffic enforcement operation on Interstate 90 escalated into a multi mile pursuit on February 18 when a Minnesota state trooper attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. According to law enforcement reports, the trooper initially received a complaint regarding a Porsche traveling at 110 miles per hour. While the vehicle appeared to slow down for the initiated traffic stop, the driver suddenly accelerated to 125 miles per hour, initiating a dangerous chase. The driver wove through interstate traffic for approximately seven miles before officers successfully brought the vehicle to a halt.

Erratic Behavior and Sobriety Investigation

Upon being stopped, the driver was identified as 31 year old Jill Marie Wetmore of Alexandria, Virginia. Law enforcement officials noted that Wetmore’s behavior was highly unusual; she reportedly laughed and danced after exiting her vehicle while the trooper attempted to communicate with her. Suspecting she was under the influence of an intoxicating substance, the trooper conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests at the scene. These observations led officers to secure a warrant for a blood or urine sample to determine the driver's level of impairment.

Refusal of Testing and Legal Consequences

Despite being informed that refusing a court ordered chemical test is a crime under Minnesota law, Wetmore allegedly declined both blood and urine testing. This refusal, combined with the earlier pursuit, led to a range of formal charges filed in Jackson County. Wetmore is currently charged with fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, which is classified as a felony, and third degree DWI, a gross misdemeanor. The strategic rationale for these charges reflects the severity of the danger posed to other motorists by high speed evasion and suspected impaired driving on a major interstate.
