Foiled Escape Attempt During Hospital Observation
A routine medical transport from the Vanderburgh County Jail escalated into a criminal investigation after an inmate allegedly attempted to flee from custody. According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, Connor Spachtholz had been admitted to a local Evansville hospital for observation and was under the constant watch of a designated sheriff’s deputy. The situation shifted on Wednesday morning when Spachtholz requested privacy to use the bathroom and take a shower. Shortly after he entered the facility, the supervising deputy reported hearing a loud, metallic crash emanating from the bathroom, prompting an immediate intervention and the discovery of a tampered ceiling.
Physical Evidence Contradicts Claims of Accidental Damage
Upon entering the bathroom, deputies and hospital security personnel encountered a scene of significant destruction that suggested a deliberate attempt to breach the building's infrastructure. Multiple ceiling tiles had been torn from their tracking and were scattered across the floor, while a light fixture was found hanging by its wiring. Most notably, a section of drywall located above the toilet had been broken off, with investigators noting that the debris appeared to have been forcefully pulled down from the inside of the wall cavity. Although Spachtholz initially claimed the damage was the result of an accidental fall, sheriff’s officials stated that the physical evidence and the trajectory of the debris were entirely inconsistent with his account.
Level 5 Felony Charges and Hospital Police Involvement
Following the incident, Spachtholz was medically cleared, discharged from the hospital, and immediately transported back to the Vanderburgh County Jail. He now faces a Level 5 felony charge for Escape, a serious offense in Indiana that carries significant prison time if convicted. In addition to the escape charge, hospital police have filed supplementary charges of Criminal Mischief to address the thousands of dollars in property damage caused to the medical facility. The Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that such attempts are rare due to the strict custody watch protocols in place, but the incident has prompted a review of security measures during off site inmate stays.
