Academics Evade Tragedy During Ramadan Fast-Breaking Event
A gathering of high-ranking academics at the University of Maiduguri narrowly avoided a catastrophic loss of life following a targeted suicide attack at the main entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). The group had been guests of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Ahmed Ahijo, for a traditional breaking of the Ramadan fast. Moments after the event concluded, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the hospital’s exit gate. While many professors managed to escape by scaling the perimeter walls or fleeing the immediate vicinity in their vehicles, reports indicate that at least one close associate of the CMD was unable to escape and perished in the blast.
Triple Bombing Campaign Rocks Maiduguri Metropolis
The attack at the UMTH gate was one of three coordinated explosions that struck the Borno State capital on the evening of Monday, March 16, 2026. At approximately 7:00 PM, as residents were observing the sunset prayer and breaking their fast, additional blasts occurred at the Monday Market and the Post Office general area. According to official police reports, the triple bombing resulted in at least 23 deaths and 108 injuries, though local sources and hospital officials suggest the final casualty count may be higher. These locations have historically been targets for insurgent activity since the regional crisis began in 2009, highlighting a persistent vulnerability in the city’s central hubs.
Military Leadership Links Attacks to Local Informant Networks
In the wake of the tragedy, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, delivered a stern assessment of the security situation in the North-East. Following a strategy review with the Chief of Army Staff and the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, General Oluyede alleged that the success of such attacks often relies on complicity from within the local population. He asserted that intelligence suggests many perpetrators are residents of Borno and Yobe states who act as informants for Boko Haram and ISWAP. The CDS emphasized that the military is currently adapting to new insurgent tactics, including the use of German-manufactured drones, to regain the tactical edge.
