A Milestone of Academic Recovery and Transformation
The University of Abuja recently concluded its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies, marking a pivotal moment of institutional stabilization and growth. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi and Pro-Chancellor Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuosho, the event served as a platform to manage academic backlogs and restructure administrative priorities. Since its founding in 1988, the university has seen an extraordinary 7,900 percent increase in its student population, expanding from 500 to over 40,000 students, with a clear trajectory toward 50,000 enrollments by the year 2030.
Preparing Graduates for a Digital Global Economy
A centerpiece of the week long program was the convocation lecture delivered by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola, which focused on the intersection of fintech and Artificial Intelligence. The lecture addressed the opportunities and responsibilities inherent in a rapidly digitizing economy, urging graduates to adapt to shifting employment patterns and technological disruptions. This intellectual engagement was complemented by a Faculty Innovation Showcase where student projects and patents were exhibited, signaling the institution’s pivot toward applied research, entrepreneurship, and national economic alignment.
Social Responsibility and Civic Consciousness
The ceremonies expanded beyond academic recognition to address pressing national challenges through thematic lectures. Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, delivered a stern warning regarding the real cost of drug abuse on campus, noting that approximately 10.6 million Nigerians currently use cannabis. Additionally, the university integrated environmental stewardship into its tradition through a tree-planting exercise by top graduates, aligning the institution's goals with global climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals.
