Suspension of Humanitarian Operations
The United Nations aid agency in Afghanistan has officially ceased its operations across multiple sectors due to the escalating military offensive launched by Pakistan. This suspension includes emergency food distribution, school feeding programs, and social protection activities that previously served as a lifeline for vulnerable populations. The World Food Programme reported on Thursday that the shift from localized skirmishes to an open conflict has made the delivery of aid impossible in dozens of districts where active gunfights and aerial bombardments are currently taking place.
Impact Across Frontier Provinces
The reach of the conflict has expanded to impact 46 districts across ten specific provinces, including Nuristan, Nangarhar, and Kandahar. Many of these areas were already struggling with the aftermath of last year’s earthquakes, which decimated local housing and livelihoods. Humanitarian officials noted that the current violence has pushed half of the affected districts into emergency levels of hunger, with several provinces reporting critical levels of malnutrition among children and the elderly who are now trapped on the front lines of the border dispute.
Escalation of Cross Border Violence
The current wave of hostilities, which entered its seventh day on Thursday, began following Pakistani airstrikes aimed at what Islamabad described as terrorist facilities within Afghan territory. Afghanistan responded with retaliatory strikes, leading to a declaration of open war by the Pakistani government. Since the fighting commenced on February 26, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has documented the deaths of at least 42 civilians, with over 100 others sustaining injuries as a direct result of the kinetic operations.
