Rising Toll of Frontier Hostilities

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced on Friday that it has recorded 185 civilian casualties within Afghanistan following the latest surge in clashes with Pakistani forces. According to the mission's update, the casualties include 56 individuals killed and 129 others injured between the evening of February 26 and March 5, 2026. These figures are the result of a combination of aerial attacks and indirect fire used during the military engagements. UNAMA emphasized that the current casualty rate already exceeds those documented during a previous period of heightened tension in October 2025.

Vulnerable Populations Impacted by Strikes

A critical finding in the UNAMA report is the disproportionate impact of the conflict on vulnerable groups, with women and children accounting for approximately 55 percent of the total recorded casualties. One specific incident highlighted occurred on February 27 in the Barmal District, where airstrikes reportedly killed 14 civilians. The victims of that single strike included four women, two girls, five boys, and three men, while six additional people sustained injuries. This trend reflects a broader pattern of civilian harm that has persisted since the beginning of the year.

Context of Ongoing Regional Tensions

The recent violence is part of a larger trend of cross-Durand Line hostilities that has plagued the region throughout the past several months. UNAMA reported that at least 70 civilians were killed and 478 injured during the final quarter of 2025. In the first two months of 2026, Nangarhar Province has been a particular flashpoint, with 13 fatalities and 12 injuries recorded due to airstrikes and shelling between January 1 and February 22. The mission noted that the frequency and lethality of these border incidents have escalated significantly compared to recent historical averages.
