A National Call To Action For Better Oral Hygiene
Pepsodent, a global leader in oral care under the Unilever portfolio, has officially launched its 2026 World Oral Health Day campaign, centered on the theme “Do The 2.” The initiative, unveiled at Unilever Nigeria’s headquarters in Lagos, serves as a strategic response to the persistent challenges of oral hygiene in the country. The core message of the campaign encourages Nigerians of all ages to adopt the habit of brushing twice daily—once in the morning and once at night—while emphasizing the necessity of regular dental checkups. By targeting both children and adults, Pepsodent aims to foster lifelong behavioral changes that contribute to long-term dental wellness.
Strategic Collaborations And Targeted Reach
The campaign is a collaborative effort between Unilever Nigeria Plc and the Nigerian Dental Association (NDA), with additional support from the Federal Ministry of Health. According to Pepsodent Brand Manager Lauretta Amie, the program is designed to be one of the most expansive oral health drives in the nation's history, with a target reach of 50 million people. To achieve this, the campaign will be deployed across 17 states, with primary hubs in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. A specific goal of reaching 500,000 people through direct dental health camps and school programs has been set to facilitate early detection and treatment of oral diseases.
The Socio-Economic Impact Of Oral Health
During the launch, NDA President Dr. Emedom Elias highlighted the 2026 WOHD theme, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” noting that oral health is deeply intertwined with a person's overall quality of life. Beyond preventing cavities, good oral hygiene is essential for effective communication, learning, and social interaction. Dr. Elias called on government stakeholders to prioritize oral healthcare by integrating it more deeply into Nigeria’s primary healthcare system. He argued that neglecting dental health can lead to broader systemic issues, affecting a citizen's ability to work and contribute to the national economy.
