The Imperative of Happiness in Modern Global Governance
The Director of Peace, Security, and Conflict Prevention for the United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA), Ambassador Victor Asije, has issued a high level appeal to the international community to re-evaluate the primary objectives of government. In a message marking International Happiness Day 2026, Asije argued that the success of any national constitution should be measured by its ability to promote the collective well-being of its citizens. Citing the enlightenment philosophy of Adam Smith, he reminded heads of state that the true end of governance is the happiness of the people, a goal that remains unmet for millions living in urban and rural areas worldwide.
Nordic Models as a Blueprint for Global Well-Being
Asije pointed to the consistent success of Nordic countries in the World Happiness Report as a practical demonstration that societal joy can be systematically cultivated. He urged leaders from developing and industrial nations alike to emulate the policies of top ranked countries such as Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. According to the Ambassador, these nations have proven that by focusing on inclusive and equitable economic growth, governments can create stable environments where happiness is not merely an accidental outcome but a deliberate pillar of national policy and sustainable development.
The Psychosocial Link Between Personal Joy and Global Peace
A central theme of the UNAA Director’s address was the direct correlation between individual happiness and the mitigation of international conflict. Asije posited that if populations possessed a better understanding of themselves and their neighbors, many historical and ongoing crises, including the current tensions between Israel and Iran, might have been avoided. He asserted that global peace is significantly enhanced when the right environment is created for joy and understanding within families, religious organizations, and between nationalities, thereby reducing the likelihood of state level belligerence.
