The Apartment That Almost Changed Everything
Despite her status as a muse for directors like Quentin Tarantino, Thurman never planted permanent roots in California. She revealed that she came remarkably close to relocating during a peak period in her career, even going so far as to sign a lease on a Los Angeles apartment. However, fate intervened: "As soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within, like, six weeks," she recalled. The pregnancy prompted a pivot back to the East Coast, prioritizing family stability over Hollywood proximity.
Missing the "Community of the Profession"
While Thurman has no regrets about her happiness, she expressed a poignant sense of missed connection regarding the Los Angeles lifestyle. By staying in New York, she feels she missed out on the natural networking and camaraderie that comes with living in the industry's epicenter.
"I never did time in Los Angeles, and because of that, I kind of never integrated into the community of my own profession, and I think that’s too bad," Thurman admitted.
Instead of bonding at industry parties or studio lots, Thurman found her tribe in a more relatable setting: "I had more of a community with the other mothers at pickup on 16th Street and Rutherford Place," she said, referring to her life as a New York City parent.
