Escalation of Kinetic Strikes on Transport Infrastructure
The Ukrainian rail network has faced a staggering volume of aggression, with approximately 5,000 recorded attacks since the commencement of the full scale invasion. Board Chairman Oleksandr Pertsovsky noted that the frequency of these strikes has intensified significantly during the spring of 2026, marking a deliberate shift in enemy strategy. As the focus moves away from the national energy grid, the transportation sector has become the primary target, resulting in extensive damage to locomotives, passenger carriages, and terminal stations across the country.
Real Time Monitoring and Military Coordination
To combat the rising threat levels, Ukrzaliznytsia has deployed 15 regional monitoring teams that operate on a 24 hour basis. These units are integrated with national radar systems and maintain direct communication lines with air defense forces to verify the nature of aerial objects in real time. This coordination allows for rapid decision making regarding train stoppages or emergency evacuations, a process that Pertsovsky described as essential for navigating a combat environment where traditional safety protocols are insufficient for modern drone warfare.
Specialized Crew Training and Evacuation Protocols
The human element of the railway defense strategy involves intensive training for over 4,000 train crew members who are now specialized in emergency evacuation procedures. These drills focus on the unique dangers of railcar strikes, where metal deformation and chemical releases can turn a carriage into a terminal trap. According to Pertsovsky, the training is a direct adaptation to the reality of Shahed drones, ensuring that staff can lead passengers to safety by dispersing them away from the tracks to avoid secondary explosions or crowding.
