The Scale of the Overnight Aerial Incursion
Ukraine’s airspace became a contested theater of operations overnight as Russian forces deployed a massive wave of 153 strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the assault began on the evening of March 25 and continued into the early hours of Thursday, utilizing a diverse array of hardware. The fleet primarily consisted of approximately 100 Shahed drones, supplemented by Gerbera and Italmas models, which were launched from multiple strategic points including Bryansk, Kursk, and occupied Crimea.
Defensive Interception and Suppression Success
The Ukrainian response involved a coordinated effort across several military branches to mitigate the high volume of incoming threats. By 08:00 on March 26, preliminary data indicated that 130 enemy targets had been either shot down or electronically suppressed. This defensive success was credited to a multi layered network comprising aviation, anti aircraft missile troops, and specialized electronic warfare (EW) units. The interception efforts effectively shielded the northern, southern, and eastern regions from the bulk of the intended damage.
Impact and Recorded Hits Across the Country
Despite the high interception rate, a fraction of the swarm managed to bypass the defensive perimeter or cause damage through falling debris. Military officials recorded direct hits by 16 strike UAVs at 11 separate locations throughout the nation. Additionally, the fall of downed targets and fragmented debris was confirmed at five other sites. These incidents highlight the persistent challenge of achieving total airspace closure when faced with high saturation tactics designed to overwhelm mobile fire groups and missile batteries.
