A Strategic Assessment of Frontline Stability
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has characterized the current state of the conflict as one of hard-fought stability, noting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) remain in nearly the same territorial positions as they held one year ago. During a conversation with blogger Maks Klymenko, the President emphasized that while the geographic lines of control have seen minimal broad shifts, the attrition rate for the Russian military has escalated sharply. This assessment suggests a deliberate Ukrainian strategy of high-intensity defense intended to deplete Russian resources while preserving domestic manpower and fortified positions along the 1,000-kilometer front.
Quantifying Recent Territorial Gains in Southern Ukraine
Despite the overarching stability of the front, specific sectors have seen successful Ukrainian offensive actions since the beginning of the year. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky previously announced that 400 square kilometers had been liberated in the southern regions between late January and February 23. By March 3, President Zelenskyy updated this figure, noting that counterattacks had successfully recaptured a total of 460 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. These incremental gains reflect a localized tactical success in pushing back Russian salient points, even as the larger strategic map remains consistent with late 2025.
Outpacing Russian Territorial Acquisitions
A critical metric highlighted by the President on March 17 is the ratio of liberated land versus territory lost to the occupiers. Zelenskyy reported that over the past month, the Defense Forces were able to liberate more territory than the Russian military managed to capture during the same period. This net-positive territorial exchange is seen as a vital psychological and tactical victory, challenging the narrative of a stalled conflict. By maintaining this ratio, the AFU aims to demonstrate that Russian offensive momentum has been largely neutralized despite the ongoing disparity in heavy artillery and air support.
