Nighttime Violence In The Archer Heights Community
The peace of a residential stretch in Archer Heights was shattered late Thursday evening when a moving vehicle became the target of a violent assault. At approximately 9:21 p.m., Chicago police officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of South Kostner Avenue following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, responders discovered two teenagers who had been struck by bullets while traveling through the area. This incident marks another escalation of vehicular based violence on the city’s Southwest Side, a trend that has prompted increased patrols and community concern regarding safety on neighborhood thoroughfares.
Medical Status Of The Injured Teens
The victims, identified as a 19 year old man and a 19 year old woman, suffered distinct but severe wounds during the encounter. The young man was struck in the back, an injury that often carries high risks for long term mobility, while the young woman sustained a gunshot wound to her left ankle. Due to the nature of their injuries, both were rapidly transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where they remain in serious condition. Medical staff at the trauma center are focused on stabilizing the pair, whose lives were upended in a matter of seconds during the transit.
The Ongoing Search For Suspects
As of Friday morning, the Chicago Police Department confirmed that no one is in custody in relation to the double shooting. Area detectives are currently canvassing the South Kostner Avenue corridor for surveillance footage from private residences and commercial establishments that may have captured the moments leading up to the gunfire. The lack of immediate arrests highlights the difficulties law enforcement faces in solving drive by style attacks, where the offenders often flee the scene in high speed vehicles before a formal description can be broadcast.
