Arrest Made In Two Month Investigation Of Armed Business Robbery

The Chicago Police Department has announced the arrest of a local man linked to a violent robbery that occurred earlier this year in the Garfield Ridge community. Sonny Costello, a 25 year old resident of the 3500 block of West Pershing Road, was taken into custody on Thursday following an extensive investigation into the January 17 heist. The arrest marks a breakthrough in a case that had remained unsolved for over two months as detectives worked to identify the individuals responsible for targeting a business on the city's Southwest Side.

Victims Held At Gunpoint During Late Afternoon Heist

The incident in question took place in the 5800 block of South Archer Avenue, where two men, aged 44 and 31, were confronted by armed individuals. According to police reports, the victims were held at gunpoint while the suspects demanded property and currency. While the physical injuries reported were minimal, the trauma of the encounter and the brazen nature of the crime led to an intensified search for the perpetrators. Costello was identified as one of the primary participants in the robbery through a combination of surveillance footage and forensic evidence.

Multiple Felony Charges Filed Against Suspected Robber

Following his apprehension in Brighton Park, Costello was hit with a litany of serious legal charges. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved six felony counts, which include armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated robbery indicating a firearm. These charges reflect the heightened danger posed by the use of a weapon during the commission of the crime. Under Illinois law, armed robbery with a firearm is a Class X felony, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of six years in prison, with potential enhancements for the actual discharge of a weapon.
