Domestic Incident Turns Fatal on Sherwood Avenue

A domestic dispute in late February has escalated into a homicide investigation following the death of a Troy man. On Saturday, February 28, officers from the Troy Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Sherwood Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities identified 29-year-old Christian Petties as a suspect in a domestic incident involving her husband, Antonio Kelly. Kelly was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was immediately transported to a specialized medical facility in Montgomery for emergency treatment.

Upgraded Charges Following Victim’s Death

Initially, Petties was taken into custody and charged with first-degree domestic violence. However, after nearly two weeks of medical intervention, hospital officials confirmed that Kelly died from his injuries on Thursday, March 12. In direct response to his passing, the Troy Police Department and the Pike County District Attorney’s Office officially upgraded the charge against Petties to murder. Petties was rearrested and processed under the new warrant, marking a significant shift in the legal trajectory of the case.

Judicial Process and Aniah’s Law

Petties is currently being held at the Pike County Jail without bond. She is awaiting an "Aniah’s Law" hearing, a judicial proceeding in Alabama that allows judges to deny bail to individuals accused of certain violent crimes if they are deemed a threat to the community or a flight risk. This hearing will determine whether Petties remains incarcerated throughout the duration of the trial. The Troy Police Department has stated that the investigation into the specific circumstances of the shooting—including the motive and the events leading up to the discharge of the firearm—remains active.
