Geopolitical Conflict Drives Energy Price Volatility

The Grand Duchy’s inflation landscape shifted dramatically in March, as the national statistics body, Statec, confirmed a rise to 2.4%. This surge, up from a relatively stable 1.3% in February, is being directly linked to external geopolitical pressures. Specifically, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing war in Iran has sent shockwaves through the energy market. Statec noted that while other consumer price index (CPI) components remained moderate, the energy sector acted as the primary catalyst for the sharp monthly increase.

Sharp Increases in Fuel and Heating Costs

The overall consumer price index rose by 12.2% compared to the previous month, with liquid fuels bearing the brunt of the volatility. Heating oil prices saw a staggering monthly increase of 37.3%, representing a 33.2% jump year-on-year. Transportation costs followed a similar trajectory; diesel prices climbed by 22.2% within March, while petrol saw a 10.7% increase. In contrast to the volatility in petroleum products, gas and electricity prices remained stable during the same period, providing a minor buffer for households.

Food Inflation and Consumer Staples

Food prices, including alcohol and tobacco, rose by 2.7% compared to March 2025. This category saw diverse movements; fresh meat and vegetables rose by 5.6% and 3.6% respectively, while coffee prices surged by 11.5%. On a monthly basis, food inflation was more subdued at 0.2%. Interestingly, certain staples like pasta and vegetable oil recorded declines, and promotional pricing led to a slight decrease in the cost of alcoholic beverages, including wine and spirits.
