Handover Ceremony in Malabo Marks New Era
The maritime infrastructure of Equatorial Guinea has entered a new phase of development following the official transfer of the Malabo and Bata ports to Alport, the global port operations brand of the Türkiye based Albayrak Group. A high level ceremony was held in the capital, Malabo, attended by Equatorial Guinea’s Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua and senior Turkish diplomats, including Ambassador Ahmet Ergin. The transition, which officially began on April 1, 2026, follows a concession agreement signed in late 2024. Under this 25 year contract, Alport is tasked with the comprehensive operation, modernization, and technical development of both facilities.
Strategic Trade Hub for Central Africa
Situated along the Gulf of Guinea, the ports of Bata and Malabo serve as critical maritime hubs for the broader Central African region. Alport’s strategic vision involves transforming these ports into vital transit points for landlocked countries such as Chad and the Central African Republic. By upgrading the existing infrastructure and streamlining logistics, the Albayrak Group aims to create more efficient trade routes that extend into the northern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This expansion is expected to stimulate local economic growth and improve the flow of goods across several international borders.
Türkiye’s Growing Maritime Footprint in Africa
The acquisition of the Equatorial Guinean ports is a significant milestone in Türkiye’s proactive strategy to expand its global logistics network through private sector investment. The Albayrak Group first entered the African maritime market in 2014 with the Port of Mogadishu in Somalia and has since expanded its Alport brand to Guinea, Gambia, and the Republic of the Congo. Recent World Bank data has recognized the ports of Mogadishu and Conakry as some of the best performing in their respective subregions, a track record that Alport aims to replicate in Malabo and Bata.
