Urgent Call to Action Amidst Rising Global Caseloads

The global fight against malaria has reached a critical juncture as the World Health Organization, WHO, reports a stalled progression in eradicating the disease. According to the latest figures, global malaria cases rose to 282 million in 2024, representing an increase of approximately 9 million cases compared to the previous year. Deaths also saw an upward trend, reaching 610,000 in 2024. Tedros Adhanom, Director General of the WHO, emphasized that while the tools to end malaria exist, the African Region continues to bear a disproportionately high share of the global burden. This backdrop has informed the 2026 World Malaria Day theme, "Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must," serving as a catalyst for renewed corporate and governmental intervention.

Strengthening Health Infrastructure in the Niger Delta

In Nigeria, Chevron has prioritized the reinforcement of local health systems through strategic alliances with the Global Fund, PATH, and the Corporate Alliance for Malaria in Africa. These initiatives focus specifically on the communities surrounding Chevron's operational areas, primarily in the Niger Delta region. The company's support has facilitated the distribution of long lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets and provided essential training for healthcare workers and peer educators. By investing in disease surveillance and public awareness, these programs aim to improve early diagnosis and treatment, which remain vital components in reducing the high mortality rate associated with the disease in West Africa.

Model for Elimination in Equatorial Guinea

Chevron’s involvement in the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project, BIMEP, represents a globally recognized public private partnership aimed at total eradication. The project, led by the Government of Equatorial Guinea, was honored as the Project of the Year at Africa Energy Week in 2025 following two decades of measurable impact. BIMEP’s objective is to improve the overall health of the population as a foundation for national development. Recently, the initiative has been expanded beyond Bioko Island to support broader national ambitions. This model leverages the expertise of international energy and health partners to meet the WHO 2030 targets through collective, sustained action.
