A Devastating Rehearsal Accident
The community of Ugep in Cross River State was thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Michael Obeten during a church drama rehearsal. Obeten, a dedicated member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and an experienced performer, was assisting in the production of the "Passion of Christ" when a local pyrotechnic device failed. The incident occurred on Good Friday, a day traditionally marked by the performance he was helping to prepare.
Malfunction of Local Special Effects
The accident took place at "Station 12" of the rehearsal, the point in the play representing the death of Jesus on the cross. To enhance the dramatic effect, the production utilized a local firework known as "oginigbo," designed to create a loud thunderous sound. Witnesses reported that the device malfunctioned, sending a sharp piece of iron directly into Obeten’s head. While onlookers initially believed his fall was part of the performance, the severity became clear as he began to bleed profusely from his head, nose, and mouth.
A Dedicated Mentor and Performer
Obeten was well-known within the church for his commitment to the annual Easter plays, having portrayed the lead role of Jesus Christ in both 2023 and 2024. This year, he had stepped into a coaching and technical role, assisting younger actors with their performances, managing microphones, and overseeing makeup and stage needs. A graduate of Mass Communication, he was remembered by his peers as a talented individual who was passionate about using drama to communicate his faith.
