First Confirmed Case in Four Years Triggers Surveillance
Health authorities in Cross River State have confirmed a new case of COVID-19, ending a nearly four-year period without a documented infection in the state. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, announced the development during a press briefing in Calabar on Tuesday. The patient, identified as a 53-year-old Chinese national employed by Lafarge, reportedly fell ill several weeks after arriving in the country. This discovery has prompted an immediate reactivation of state level monitoring protocols to ensure the infection remains an isolated incident.
Patient History and Clinical Progression
According to Dr. Ayuk, the patient arrived in Nigeria on March 17, 2026, and began showing symptoms on April 10. His condition initially deteriorated at a secondary medical facility before he was transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. At UCTH, standard diagnostic protocols were observed, and samples confirmed the presence of the virus. The commissioner reassured the public that the patient is currently responding well to treatment and that there is no cause for general alarm.
Epidemiological Analysis of Potential Local Transmission
State Epidemiologist Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong noted a significant detail regarding the virus's incubation period. Given that the patient developed symptoms more than 20 days after his arrival in Nigeria—well beyond the typical 14 day window—health officials suspect the infection may have been contracted locally rather than imported. This finding has intensified the focus on identifying the specific environment in Nigeria where the transmission occurred, as it suggests the virus continues to circulate silently within the population.
