Fatal Outcome of a Traditional Disciplinary Marathon

The Ekowe community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has been thrown into turmoil following the death of Emi Sigah during a customary punishment ritual. Sigah, 47, was accused of raping a 10 year old girl in a nearby bush while she was returning from a farm with her aunt. Following the allegation, community members invoked an age-old tradition that mandates 120 strokes of the cane for sexual offenses, which are viewed locally as sacrilegious. Reports indicate that Sigah collapsed after enduring only 40 strokes of the marathon punishment and was later confirmed dead, sparking a swift response from state security agencies.

The Mechanics of Family Administered Justice

According to residents, the practice in Ekowe involves 12 distinct families, each responsible for administering 10 strokes to the accused. This collective form of discipline is intended to serve as a communal deterrent against heinous crimes. In this specific instance, some community members reportedly attempted to intervene by offering monetary fines ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 Naira as an alternative to the physical punishment. However, local youths insisted on the full execution of the tradition. The suspect was subjected to the flogging before he fainted, highlighting the severe physical toll of such unregulated customary practices.

Police Intervention and Arrest of Community Leadership

In the wake of the fatality, the Chairman of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Target Segibo, confirmed that security operatives have moved to restore order. The Youth President of Ekowe and three other individuals were arrested in connection with the death and are currently being detained at the Criminal Investigative Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command in Yenagoa. The police in Oporoma worked alongside council officials to evacuate the body, which has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary. While inquiries are ongoing, the arrests signal a firm stance against the extrajudicial application of traditional laws.
