The 911 Call and Initial Panic
In October 1989, Chuck Stuart made a frantic 911 call from his car phone, reporting that he and his pregnant wife, Carol, had been shot. Stuart claimed that after leaving a birthing class at a local hospital, they were carjacked by a Black man in a tracksuit who forced them to drive into the Mission Hill neighborhood. Carol Stuart, who was seven months pregnant, died hours later. Her son was delivered via emergency cesarean section but passed away shortly thereafter.
The Crackdown on Mission Hill
Based on Stuart's description, the Boston Police Department launched an aggressive and controversial search for the suspect. For weeks, officers flooded the mixed-race Mission Hill neighborhood, conducting hundreds of stop-and-frisks, home searches, and strip searches of Black men. The investigation left a lasting scar on the community, shaping the relationship between Mission Hill residents and law enforcement for an entire generation. White political leaders and media outlets at the time largely amplified the panic, rarely questioning the validity of Stuart's claims.
The Hoax Unravels
The narrative took a dramatic turn months later when Chuck Stuart's brother, Matthew, went to the police and admitted he had helped Chuck hide the weapon and a bag of jewelry. It was revealed that Chuck Stuart had murdered his wife to collect insurance money and had fabricated the "Black man in a tracksuit" story to exploit racial biases. Shortly after his brother's confession, Chuck Stuart committed suicide by jumping from the Tobin Bridge.
