Midnight Siege in Gwoza: Insurgents Overpower Military Outpost
The security situation in Borno State took a grim turn in the early hours of Wednesday, March 4, 2026, as suspected Boko Haram terrorists conducted a coordinated assault on Ngoshe, a community in Gwoza Local Government Area. Utilizing a fleet of motorcycles and gun trucks, the insurgents struck the military base at approximately 1:00 AM. Despite an initial attempt by troops to repel the invaders, witnesses reported that the sheer volume of the attackers eventually overpowered the soldiers stationed there. The breach allowed the terrorists to infiltrate the town, where they operated for several hours with little resistance, eventually setting fire to significant parts of the settlement before retreating.
Casualty Reports and the Abduction of Women
While the official death toll remains unconfirmed by the military high command, local sources and survivors have painted a harrowing picture of the aftermath. Residents claimed that nine soldiers lost their lives during the defense of the base. Following the military breach, the insurgents turned their attention to the civilian population, reportedly killing an unconfirmed number of men and specifically targeting women for abduction. ASP Nahum Daso, Spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, confirmed the attack and noted that many residents are currently missing, with preliminary intelligence suggesting they were forcibly taken toward the nearby Mandara Mountains.
Mass Displacement as Survivors Flee to Pulka Town
The brutality of the 1:00 AM raid has triggered a fresh humanitarian crisis in the region, with hundreds of survivors fleeing Ngoshe for the relative safety of Pulka town. Fearing a secondary attack, many residents abandoned their homes and belongings under the cover of darkness. One anonymous resident described the scene as one of total chaos, stating that the insurgents’ ability to overpower the local military presence has shattered the community’s sense of security. The Mandara Mountains, a known stronghold for various insurgent factions, are believed to be the destination for the kidnapped victims, complicating potential rescue efforts due to the difficult terrain.
