ShotSpotter Alerts Authorities to Rapid Gunfire Exchange
The peace of Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood was disrupted Monday evening when automated acoustic sensors detected a high volume of gunfire near the 500 block of Rosedale Street. According to police reports, the ShotSpotter system recorded an initial burst of 13 rounds at approximately 7:25 p.m., followed by two additional shots seconds later. Witnesses at the scene informed responding officers that a group of roughly 10 teenagers had gathered in the street immediately prior to the outbreak of violence. Investigators recovered five spent 9mm casings from the pavement and noted that at least two projectiles had struck a nearby residence occupied by seven people.
Police Apprehend Suspect Following Neighborhood Pursuit
Acting on descriptions broadcast over the police scanner, patrolling officers identified two individuals matching the shooter’s profile on Oakwood Street. The encounter quickly escalated into a foot chase when the teenagers fled upon seeing the police cruiser. Authorities eventually detained 16 year old Jaison Martin, a resident of the city’s East Liberty neighborhood. According to the criminal complaint, Martin made spontaneous statements during his arrest, claiming that he fired his weapon in self defense after seeing a laser sight aimed at his head. He further suggested to officers that he may have been grazed by a bullet during the exchange.
Life Saving Measures for 14 Year Old Victim
While one team of officers pursued the fleeing suspects, others discovered a 14 year old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his thigh. First responders applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg to control significant bleeding before he was transported to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Medical officials have listed the teenager, whose identity has not been released due to his age, in stable condition. The rapid application of the tourniquet by responding officers was cited as a critical factor in stabilizing the youth before professional paramedics arrived at the Rosedale Street scene.
