Emergency Status for Solar Construction
Southland Mayor Rob Scott has confirmed that the council is exploring Section 330 of the Resource Management Act (RMA) to classify the solar farm as "emergency works." This would allow construction to commence while the formal consenting process continues. The move is a direct response to "exceptional circumstances" created by the global fuel crisis, which has seen diesel at the island's only pump exceed $4 per litre. The project, supported by a $15 million government loan, is expected to reduce the island's diesel consumption for electricity by approximately 75%.
Resident Impact: "Short Steps" Toward Higher Bills
While the solar project offers long-term stability, the immediate outlook for Rakiura residents is challenging.
Cost Spikes: The council-owned power station reported a 45% increase in diesel costs in just one week.
Consumer Warnings: Councillor Jon Spraggon warned residents to conserve electricity immediately, noting that while the council cannot raise prices instantly, "short steps" up in power bills are inevitable this winter.
