The Cost of Isolation
The Rakiura Community Board has approved a rate increase of four cents, bringing the cost of electricity to 89 cents per kilowatt hour. To put this in perspective, mainland New Zealanders typically pay significantly less, highlighting the extreme energy poverty facing the island's approximately 480 residents.
To prevent an even sharper spike, the board also approved:
Reserve Funding: Drawing $250,000 from the Stewart Island Electricity Supply Authority’s reserves to offset fuel costs.
Strategic Pricing: The increase was capped at just under 5% to avoid a mandatory individual notification process, which would have delayed implementation and increased administrative costs.
