Regional Leadership Rejects Unauthorized Internal Election Reports

The South West zonal chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has issued a firm rebuttal against circulating information regarding purported regional congresses. Sanya Atofarati, the zonal publicity secretary, characterized these reports as entirely fraudulent and designed to mislead the general public and party faithful. In a formal communication released from Ado Ekiti, the party emphasized that no official timetable has been approved for such activities, urging members to maintain focus and disregard any announcements originating from unofficial channels.

Internal Factionalization Deepens National Party Instability

This regional denial is set against the backdrop of a significant national rupture within the primary opposition party. The organization has fractured into two distinct camps, with one side following Samuel Anyanwu and the opposing wing recognizing Taminu Turaki as the legitimate leader. The South West zone remains aligned with the Turaki-led faction, which maintains that the current administrative focus is on rebuilding the party through established disciplinary measures and internal democratic processes rather than uncoordinated regional elections.

Status of State Executives Remains Legally Solidified

Atofarati clarified that the necessity for new congresses is largely nonexistent across the South West at this time. According to the publicity secretary, five of the six states in the region currently operate under executives that were duly elected and remain legally constituted. The only outlier is Osun State, where the National Working Committee intervened in January 2026 to appoint a valid caretaker committee to oversee administrative duties, negating any immediate requirement for a regional-wide electoral exercise.
