Meeting the Surge in Court Demand

As part of the Sports Facilities Master Plan (SFMP), Singapore is set to significantly expand its public sporting infrastructure. Acting Minister David Neo highlighted that popular sports like badminton and pickleball have seen a surge in participation, leading to a shortage of facilities during peak hours. To address this, 50 multipurpose courts will be developed by 2031. The rollout is already underway: eight dual-use courts opened at The Kallang in January, with another eight pickleball-specific courts slated for the Little India bus terminal in the coming months. Minister Neo emphasized that the government remains mindful of residential noise levels as these courts are integrated into local estates.

The S$10 Million Multi-School CCA Grant

In a move to move beyond traditional school-based competition, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) unveiled a S$10 million grant to encourage the formation of Multi-School Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) teams. This initiative allows students from different schools to train and compete together, promoting social mixing across different socio-economic backgrounds. Each multi-school team can receive up to S$200,000 over four years to cover costs for facilities, transportation, and professional coaching. This program aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience the camaraderie and life lessons inherent in organized sports, regardless of their individual school's resources.

Expanding the School Sports Fiesta

Building on the success of last year's pilot, Sport Singapore (SportSG) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) are expanding the "School Sports Fiesta" events. The program, which encourages students from various schools to try new sports and compete in a low-stakes, high-participation environment, reached 2,000 students across 16 schools in its inaugural edition. The ministry now aims to double that reach, bringing the fiesta to 32 schools by next year. This initiative is a core component of the government's strategy to make sports more inclusive and accessible to the youth.
