A Collaborative Roadmap for the EV Transition
In a significant move to align Singapore’s workforce with its green transportation goals, Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling announced the launch of a dedicated skills pathway for electric vehicle (EV) technical specialists. Introduced during the Committee of Supply debate on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the initiative is a joint effort between the National Transport Academy, SkillsFuture Singapore, and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore. The pathway is designed to provide a clear progression roadmap for automotive technicians, ensuring that the local talent pool can keep pace with the rapid adoption of EVs across the city-state.
Financial Support and Industry-Led Curriculum
To encourage participation and lower the barrier for mid-career switchers and existing mechanics, the government is offering substantial financial incentives. Eligible individuals can receive course fee subsidies of at least 50% for programs approved by SkillsFuture Singapore. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) emphasized that the curriculum was not developed in a vacuum; it incorporates feedback and requirements from all four public bus operators and major players in the automotive sector. This ensures that the training is practically relevant and addresses the specific technical challenges associated with high-voltage EV systems.
The Four-Tier Progression System
The pathway is structured into four distinct levels of expertise, allowing for long-term career growth:
