Defiance of Judicial Directives
A routine property inspection turned into a volatile confrontation this week when landowners in the Alaka district were met with armed resistance from police officers. The landowners arrived at their plots on Wednesday following a court order that explicitly mandated the withdrawal of all security personnel from the disputed land. Instead of finding a vacant site ready for development, the owners were intercepted by officers who questioned their presence and allegedly issued life-threatening warnings. This continued occupation raises significant questions about the rule of law and the willingness of local law enforcement to adhere to the decisions of the judiciary.
Voices from the Disputed Site
Tolani Agbajobi, one of the affected landowners, expressed deep concern over the lack of protection for citizens' rights. He noted that the inspection was intended to be a celebratory milestone for many who had been barred from their property for years. The presence of armed men prepared to use force against legitimate owners, according to Agbajobi, highlights a breakdown in institutional discipline. Another owner, identified as Samuel, criticized what he described as a "culture of impunity," where officers appear to operate outside the constitutional framework and the direct orders of their own leadership.
The Stance of Police Leadership
The incident stands in direct contradiction to recent policy statements made by the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. Former Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun previously established a clear directive prohibiting officers from participating in land recovery efforts, citing such actions as outside the Force's constitutional mandate. The current landowners are now appealing to Inspector General Tunji Disu to investigate why these officers remain on the Alaka land. They are demanding immediate disciplinary action against those found to be in contempt of the subsisting court order to prevent further intimidation of the public.
