Initiation of Pursuit in Ballard County

The high speed incident began at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, in the town of Wickliffe. A Kentucky State Police trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle on North 4th Street after observing an equipment violation. Rather than pulling over, the driver later identified as 23 year old Damon L. Crawford of Shively, Kentucky accelerated away from the officer, traveling eastbound onto KY 286 and out of Wickliffe city limits.

Multi Jurisdictional Chase Across Western Kentucky

As the pursuit intensified, it crossed from Ballard County into McCracken County along U.S. 62. Law enforcement agencies coordinated to deploy tire deflation devices to end the chase safely. An initial attempt at the intersection of U.S. 62 and North Gum Springs Road was unsuccessful. However, a second deployment near the Interstate 24 interchange successfully deflated two of the vehicle's tires. Despite the damage, Crawford continued to flee, leading troopers and McCracken County Sheriff’s deputies onto I-24 and into Marshall County.

Tactical Intervention and Final Arrest

The pursuit finally reached its conclusion in Marshall County after a third tire deflation device, deployed by the Calvert City Police Department, successfully disabled the remaining two tires. Even with all four tires deflated, Crawford continued to operate the vehicle until a KSP trooper performed a tactical intervention, forcing the car off the roadway and onto an embankment. Crawford was taken into custody without further incident.
