Capture of Second Suspect in Multi State Search

The search for a Michigan man accused of extreme animal cruelty has concluded following a coordinated effort between regional law enforcement agencies. Kim Shires, 65, was taken into custody on Monday afternoon at a hotel in Indiana, according to reports from the Flint Township Police Department. His wife, Brenda Shires, 65, was previously arrested last week in Grand Rapids. The couple had allegedly been on the run since February, when authorities first uncovered the scale of the neglect at their residence.

Rescuing Survivors from "Physically Revolting" Conditions

The investigation began on Feb. 10, when animal control officers and police were called to a Flint Township home. Upon entry, responders discovered 61 living dogs and three cats surviving in what officials described as "squalor." The conditions inside were so severe that hazardous levels of ammonia from feces and filth made the air unsafe for prolonged exposure, forcing officers to rotate shifts while conducting the rescue. Genesee County Animal Control (GCAC) reported that the surviving animals were highly traumatized, with many attempting to hide or cling to soiled furniture when approached by rescuers.

Discovery of Deceased Pets and Pending Charges

In addition to the survivors, authorities made the grim discovery of 26 deceased dogs and one dead cat. The remains were found discarded in trash bags placed near the front door of the house. The Shires are now facing a litany of serious legal consequences, including charges for abandoning/cruelty to animals, killing/torturing animals, and specific violations regarding the improper disposal of dead animals. Kim Shires currently remains in an Indiana jail awaiting extradition to Michigan for his formal arraignment.
