The Conclusion of a High-Stakes Investigation

Ukraine’s Security Service has finalized the indictment against the primary suspect in the 2025 assassination of Andriy Parubiy, a central figure in Ukraine’s modern political history. According to the SBU, the perpetrator now faces the maximum penalty of life imprisonment with the confiscation of all property. The investigation, supervised by the regional prosecutor's office, has transitioned from a localized manhunt into a comprehensive legal case involving high-level charges of treason and terrorism. Parubiy, a veteran lawmaker and former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, was killed in broad daylight in Lviv on August 30, 2025.

From Missing Son to Russian Recruitment

The suspect, identified as a 53-year-old resident of Lviv, was reportedly recruited by Russian intelligence services in 2024. According to investigators, the man was searching Telegram channels for any information regarding his son, who had gone missing while serving in the combat zone in Donetsk. Russian operatives exploited his vulnerability, initially assigning him low-level tasks such as tracking the movement of fuel convoys and military positions. Eventually, the Russians proposed a "more complex" mission: the elimination of a high-profile state official. Driven by what the SBU describes as ideological motives, the hitman targeted Parubiy for his lifelong defense of Ukrainian independence.

Details of the August 30 Assassination

The assassination was a meticulously planned operation. On the morning of August 30, the suspect, disguised as a food courier and riding an electric bike, approached Parubiy and fired eight shots with a short-barreled firearm. The injuries proved fatal, and the lawmaker died at the scene. Following the attack, the perpetrator attempted to destroy evidence and flee the country. He was eventually detained in September 2025 in the Khmelnytsky region as he attempted to cross the border illegally. Subsequent searches uncovered a hidden cache at Lychakiv Cemetery containing a sawed-off hunting rifle intended for further subversive acts.
