Statewide Clampdown on Security Threats

In a proactive move to enhance public safety, the Rivers State Police Command has announced a comprehensive enforcement exercise aimed at removing unidentified vehicles from the state's roads. Starting Monday, March 16, 2026, police units will conduct a statewide clampdown on motorists operating without valid registration or visible number plates. Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated on Thursday that these vehicles pose a significant security risk, as they are often utilized by criminal elements to evade detection.

Targeting Veiled Plates and Unauthorized Lighting

The operation will specifically target individuals who deliberately cover or obscure their vehicle's number plates to avoid identification. Additionally, the police intend to impound vehicles equipped with revolving or flashing lights (sirens) without official government authorization. Ms. Iringe-Koko warned that the unauthorized use of such devices by private individuals is strictly prohibited and that defaulters will face immediate vehicle impoundment and potential prosecution.

Tinted Windows and Commercial Vehicle Restrictions

A significant portion of the enforcement will focus on the use of tinted glass, particularly on commercial vehicles. The command warned that tinted windows are a common feature of vehicles used by kidnapping syndicates and armed robbery gangs to conceal their identities and their victims. The police advised members of the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid boarding commercial vehicles with heavily tinted windows, framing the restriction as a vital component of crime prevention.
