A New Course for a Historic Race
Under the new management of the Opua Cruising Club, the 16th edition of the race (which began in 1970) features a strategic course change. Instead of heading directly into the Tasman Sea, the fleet will navigate up the Northland coast to Cape Reinga before making the crossing to Southport, Queensland.
Why Opua? Race director Julie Kidman notes that Opua’s status as a customs port and its superior marine services made it the ideal replacement for New Plymouth.
Economic Impact: The race is supported by the government’s Major Events Fund, with international crews and support teams expected to boost local tourism.
Pre-Race Festivities: A festival is planned ahead of the 30 May start date, including a performance by former racer and Mockers frontman Andrew Fagan.
