The Funding Impasse
The hosting of the event was contingent on a joint funding model between Auckland Council and the Major Events Fund (MEF). While Auckland Council had committed funds and resolved infrastructure and land requirements, the government's portion was rejected.
Why was it declined?
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston stated that the 2027 event failed to meet the MEF's "Focus Area One" criteria. To receive funding, an event must demonstrate:
Net national economic benefits to New Zealand.
Attraction of a significant number of international visitors.
