A Joyful Milestone Turned Tragic
A week that was intended to celebrate the arrival of a new child has turned into a period of mourning for the family of Faith Odaudu-Ogunleye. The 33-year-old mother visited St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital in Ikorodu to deliver her second child. While the delivery was initially successful, Faith’s health rapidly declined. Her husband, Johnson, and other relatives allege that she bled to death due to a series of medical errors and a systemic lack of urgency by the hospital’s clinical team.
Allegations of Surgical Error and Negligence
The family’s grievances center on specific claims of surgical malpractice. Sharon Michael, the deceased's sister, alleged that an independent medical review suggested Faith’s bladder had been accidentally cut during her Caesarean section and was not properly repaired. Despite the family providing four pints of blood for transfusions, Faith continued to bleed abnormally. The family claims hospital staff dismissed their concerns, suggesting the internal injury would heal on its own rather than performing the necessary corrective surgery.
Delayed Transfer and Financial Disputes
As Faith’s condition became critical on Monday, April 27, her family requested an emergency transfer to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). However, they allege that St. Raphael staff delayed the process by insisting on upfront payments for ambulance services and oxygen. Faith tragically passed away during the transit to LUTH. Upon returning her body to St. Raphael, the family claims they were met with further demands for payment before the body could be admitted to the morgue, an interaction they described as devoid of compassion or remorse.
