Coordinated Violence Interrupts Whale Watching Excursion in Puerto Vallarta
The tranquility of a weekend getaway turned into a survival situation for Brad Lippitz, a well known luxury broker with Compass in Chicago, and his husband, Yoni Pizer. On the morning of February 22, the couple was traveling with friends toward a whale watching trip when their rental vehicle was intercepted by an armed individual. According to Pizer, the assailant banged on the driver side window with a firearm, demanding that the occupants vacate the car immediately. This incident was part of a wider, synchronized assault in the popular resort town, where criminals used hijacked vehicles to create blockades across major thoroughfares.
Arson and Gunfire Create Atmosphere of Terror on Local Roads
The situation escalated rapidly as the hijackers moved to neutralize the vehicles they had seized. After forcing the group out, the attackers reportedly threw explosive devices into the cars, causing them to ignite instantly. According to Pizer, who serves as a liaison for U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, the violence was not limited to private transport, as attackers also targeted public buses to bolster their roadblocks. While the gunfire appeared intended to intimidate rather than kill, the resulting chaos saw columns of smoke rising from multiple neighborhoods. Pizer described the event as a calculated terrorist attack rather than an isolated criminal act, reflecting the scale of the disruption.
Separation and Shelter During Eight Hour Siege
In the panic that followed the explosions and gunfire, the group was split up as they fled for safety. Lippitz and one friend were separated from Pizer, eventually finding refuge in an orphanage adjacent to a local Catholic church. According to reports, the pair remained in hiding for approximately eight hours while the sounds of unrest continued in the surrounding area. Meanwhile, Pizer was picked up by a local driver and managed to reach the safety of the city center before eventually reuniting with Lippitz at their condo. The group has since remained in a shelter in place status, monitoring the security situation from their private residence.
