A 47-year-old man originally from Cape Town has been removed from society following a decisive ruling by the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court. Neil Klein was sentenced to a total of 20 years in direct imprisonment after being found guilty of sexually violating two fellow residents at a shelter in Akasia. The sentence is comprised of 15 years for a completed rape and an additional five years for an attempted sexual assault, reflecting the court's view of the severe nature of his conduct within a communal living environment designed for the indigent.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana detailed a disturbing pattern of behavior that unfolded over several months in 2023. The first recorded incident took place in July, where a 43-year-old victim was cornered and threatened by Klein in the shelter’s bathroom, an act only halted by an external interruption. Despite this close call, a second, more severe attack occurred in November 2023, during which Klein successfully forced a 32-year-old man to undress before raping him. The immediate reporting of the second incident to a shelter employee led to Klein’s swift arrest.

Prosecution Overcomes Not Guilty Plea with Victim Testimony

Throughout the trial, Klein maintained his innocence, attempting to frame the allegations as a retaliatory fabrication stemming from a personal debt. However, State Prosecutor Advocate Given Twala successfully dismantled this defense by presenting consistent and harrowing testimony from both survivors. The prosecution argued that the evidence proved Klein’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, highlighting that the geographical and situational similarities of the attacks in the facility's bathrooms pointed toward a calculated predatory strategy rather than a series of coincidental disputes.
